The majority of the native Spanish population belongs to a branch of Christianity: Catholicism. The two other main branches are Protestant and Orthodox.
Some Christians in Spain have roots abroad. Protestants are mainly European and American, some from Oceania and a small number of Africans and Asians - the Philippines being the only country in Asia that is Catholic. Within this heading there are groups such as Evangelists, Pentecostalists and Methodists, with other groups that some might consider sects, like Jehovah's Witnesses, and Mormons...
The majority of Orthodox Christians have origins in Greece and the countries and republics of the former USSR. |

| There is an increasing number of non-practising Catholics and Protestants. During Franco's dictatorship (1939-1975) the Church and the State walked hand in hand, which meant that Spain was a confessional Catholic State, where by law separations and divorces were forbidden, together with abortions. In the latter case many women used to go 'on holiday' to London. After Franco's death, and with the Constitution of 1978, Spain became a non- confessional state (although it is not a secular one). |
