'Words and rainbows .......'

Edurne: Do you mind if I ask you both a question? I was bit scared to ask before.....

Burama & Mohamed: No, go ahead...

Edurne: OK, I have always called you Mohamed and Burama, but suppose I had to describe you, I'd say Burama was born in Gambia and Mohamed was born in Morocco. But if I had to tell someone what you look like I'd say that you're black Burama, and you're brown Mohamed, or maybe very tanned, a bit similar to the Roma.

Mohamed: Jaja! So, if I'm tanned then Burama is burned... He must have fallen asleep in the sun! Jaja! Like that guy on the boat over there - see how pale he is? I bet he's English, and he's going to be so pink if he doesn't wake up soon!

All: laugh

Burama: I must admit that when I first came to Spain as a child I hated being called black.

Mohamed: It would be worse if they called you a n*****.

Burama: Well, yeah, that would be worse. When anyone calls you that they mean to be insulting. It's not the same with black.

Edurne: I wonder how Lucía would react if someone said she's Roma, or Gitana? Or how would Urpi like being called morena (brown)?

Mohamed: I asked Lucia about it not long ago and she said that she's proud to be Roma so she doesn't mind at all if someone describes her that way. Mind you, you also said that it depends on the tone of the voice. I agree, that's how I see it as well.

Burama: But let me finish what I was saying... Like I said, at first I just didn't like it when people mentioned my colour. I didn't like being called black, and I didn't like 'coloured' either. I mean, we are all coloured - you too Edurne, you're not transparent!

Edurne: Of course. I agree with you, but calling you 'coloured' is a way of avoiding the word black. Like there is something wrong with black.

Burama: OK, but now, like Lucía is proud to be called Roma, I'm proud to be called black, if people say it without meaning to put me down.

Edurne: All right, so from now on I know that for you, Burama, it's all right to say you're black, and I can describe you, Mohamed, as brown, okay?

Burama & Mohamed: Exactly. Spot on.
