   'What is Spanish culture?'
Josep: Hi Burama. You're very quiet...
Burama: I'm thinking about an argument we just had with some woman. You know the kind of thing... if they come to Spain they should adopt Spanish culture, all that kind of thing...
Josep: Well, it doesn't sound too bad to me. You speak Spanish don't you?
Lucia: Yeah but just think about it Josep, what is Spanish culture? You speak a different language from me at home, I go to a different kind of church, many people say I'm not really Spanish even though my family have been here for centuries.
Josep: But there are some things which are just different.
Burama: Oh oh. Like what?
Josep: Well, having more than one wife for one thing. There's no way that's part of Spanish culture.
Burama: It depends how far back you go. The south of Spain was a Muslim country once you know.
Josep: But it's not now is it? We're talking about now, not 1511. You're changing the subject, the fact is there's no way polygamy is a Spanish custom and it's even against the law.
Burama: Look, this is not a real issue. Sure, Islam allows a man to have up to four wives, but it's really not very common even in Islamic countries, because Islam says all the wives must be treated equally. And before you say it, yes, I am sure many wives are not treated equally, and no, I don't agree with that.
Isabel: And of course all over Spain women are treated equally aren't they? I don't think so! My father really does an equal share of jobs at home, but he says some men tell him he is crazy.
Lucia: I think the problem is about human rights, not about some customs and traditions of some people who happen to have roots outside Spain. The Roma have some different customs but I hope no-one tries to tell me I'm not really Spanish.
Burama: And isn't there some religious group that doesn't allow blood transfusions even if their baby will die? They are Spanish, but what about the baby's human rights? Is the custom more important?
