Who is Spanish?

Maruxa: What's that bracelet?

Mohamed: It's Moroccan. Something my grandmother gave me.

Josep: Is that something lots of Moroccans wear?

Mohamed: I guess so, but then I'm not Moroccan, I'm Spanish.

Josep: But weren't you born in Morocco?

Mohamed: Yes, but so what?

Josep: Well..... I don't mean to be racist or anything, but how can you be Spanish? I mean, do you think people see you as Spanish?

Mohamed: Why shouldn't they?

Josep: Because of your looks.

Maruxa: But it's not just how you look that decides where you belong. My parents' best friends were both born in Toledo, then they moved to Galicia and learned to speak Gallego. Actually you know their son Juan? He went to Galicia when he was six months old. Is he 'really' from Toledo?

Josep: That's different. Toledo is in Spain, Morocco isn't.

Maruxa: And aren't we all supposed to be Europeans anyway? We are supposed to be all one Europe now. Is Mohamed included in that? Is Europe more important than Africa? Does Europe just mean white people?

Mohamed: I think of myself as Spanish so that means I'm European. If I didn't have brown skin you wouldn't know if I was born here or in Amsterdam!

Josep: It's nothing to do with brown skin. I'm not saying that.

Mohamed: Yes you are! You just said it, you said because of my looks people wouldn't think I'm Spanish.

Josep: That's other people, I'm not saying I think that. I'm just trying to work out what I think. Don't give me a hard time.

Mohamed: I don't want to give you a hard time, I just get sick of people assuming I'm not Spanish because I look different. I feel Spanish, I think in Spanish, I'm not going anywhere. Get it?

Josep: Okay okay. I only asked. Nice bracelet anyway.
