'Love and marriage......'

Edurne: Look at all those couples on the grass! There's some serious kissing going on around here. Lucia, you always say you're such a romantic, but what do you think about that? I don't suppose your family would be very pleased if you were one of these couples.

Lucía: Oh I see, you're asking me about arranged marriages amongst Romas aren't you? Actually, I can tell you that they are slowly disappearing, slowly, but disappearing. I would marry any payo, whatever their culture and religion. Perhaps my community in general would prefer me to marry a Gitano, but it would be my decision in the end. Actually, since you mention it, there is someone my parents had in mind for me, but since I didn't go for him in the least they've stopped dropping hints about him.....

Edurne: I remember you saying this once before. I couldn't believe it. You're not even old enough to get married......

Lucía: Yeah but I don't want to yet so it's not an issue is it? I told you, I'm going to choose who I marry, but my parents can still give their opinion. Actually, I might be so busy on my career they can help me look for someone suitably gorgeous and clever. .....

Burama: This is all very well, but it seems to me you're forgetting something....

Edurne: What?

Burama: How come Lucia is too young for her parents to be thinking about her marriage and her future, but loads of people in our class say they're serious about someone? I can even think of one or two who say 'Oh I'd really like to marry him!' They're allowed to think about marriage, but only if it's not arranged?

Ivan: Can I say something?

Everyone else: Go on then

Ivan: Yeah, I know others talk about being serious about someone, but you can't have boyfriends can you?

Edurne: Really? No offence, but I'd hate it if my mum tried to tell me who I could go out with, never mind who I was going to marry. It doesn't seem right...

Burama: Oh no, here we go again. I get sick of people thinking parents who help with marriages are really cruel and treat us badly. It's just not like that.

Edurne: Well, look, you're one of my best friends, okay, so I'm asking you about it. I just can't imagine what it's like, that's all. And I know you like Maruxa, you can't fool me!

Burama: Okay, well I will have kind of an arranged marriage, and I know lots of people think is really weird, but I think it's okay.
