'Rivalries in Spain.....'

Edurne: I can't understand why people from Palestine and Israel don't get on well. They are always fighting and killing each other. Why don't they just stop and try to live peacefully?

Isabel: I know. I can't see how war and hate could ever make anything better. If you ask me it just seems to make things worse....

Josep: Yeah but listen. First of all, it is all very easy to say, and second, we don't need to go so far away.

Edurne: What do you mean?

Isabel: No he's right, we don't. What about the disputes we have inside our own country?

Josep: Exactly! What about the Basque Country, Edurne? I know people say it sounds a bit unreal, but how come all Spaniards, all people living in Spain, can't live together without fighting?

Edurne: Well don't ask me. I agree with you.

Isabel: It's not just about the Basque country though is it? People think badly of other parts too, you know...... Andalusians are supposed to be lazy, Catalans are supposed to be mean, Galicians are ignorant and uneducated, Basques are arrogant and male chauvinist.....

Josep: Still, we don't compare so well with other places, there's violence here in Spain with terrorist groups like ETA.

Edurne: Well, my family always say it's a minority of people from the Basque Country who supports the way ETA tries to force the central government of Spain to give independence to the Basque Country. It's confusing though, you could say it's not democratic, but I heard someone say it's not democratic for the rest of Spain to decide on what's best for the Basques....

Josep: I just hope things change, so fewer countries fight against each other and there are fewer rivalries within countries.
