'Some jokes aren't funny....'

Josep: Hey Isabel, we saw you last night, but you just walked right past us. Typical person from Madrid - nose in the air, too proud to notice the rest of us! I see you've got a new schoolbag. It's very big and smart, but then I suppose it would be, you coming from Madrid.

Isabel: That's right. Madrid has the best of everything. Best football team, bigger airport, biggest and best city in fact.

Josep: I expect it was an expensive bag too, it would be, naturally, a typical Madrid bag.

Isabel: Well whatever it cost, you wouldn't have bought it, you're too mean.

Maruxa: But there's not much point in you having such a nice bag, since you're too lazy to carry anything in it.

Isabel: Yeah well, at least there's some point in me having books, even if I need servants to carry them for me. At least I can read, there is some point in me studying. Who ever heard of a Gallego having a book? Still, I suppose you could use it to hold a door open, or light fires with in winter to attract the witches.

Edurne: Listen to you lot. I thought you were friends.

Josep: Who asked you? I suppose a Basque wouldn't need a book because they know everything already? What's the point in you having a maths book that says two and two are four? If you think it's three, you always know best, the teachers will just have to rewrite the book, right Edurne?

Edurne: Yeah but you forget, there would be no point in me even having a maths book, I mean, girls can't do maths can they? Everyone knows that. Just like everyone knows the Madrid people are boastful, the Catalans are mean, the Galicians are stupid, and the people from the south are lazy, we Basques always exaggerate...

Maruxa: .....and always cause trouble...

Edurne: Oh yes, how could I forget, we always cause trouble. Don't trust a Basque, we've all got bombs in our pockets.

Isabel: It's a bit silly all this isn't it? Why are we doing this? Josep is the most generous person here .... I still owe him money for the cinema from two months ago, and he hasn't even asked me for it.

Maruxa: That's because he loves you Isabel... But anyway, you're right, this violent troublesome Basque friend of ours was the one who stood up for Burama the other day in that argument in class. She was the peacemaker while the rest of us were arguing.

Edurne: Just give me a job in the United Nations any day...

Maruxa: No, that will have to be me. They need clever people, and who got the highest marks in that Spanish test last week? Was it this stupid Gallego or was I dreaming? Mind you, I have to say it was partly because Isabel helped me with the homework I didn't understand.....

Isabel: Oh you're so generous Maruxa. I think maybe you just have a bigger brain....

Urpi: This all sounds crazy to me. Just because I've met Isabel and she's helpful that doesn't mean everyone from Andalusia is helpful. It would be pretty stupid for me to expect every Catalan to be generous just because Josep is.

Maruxa: Yeah, but all Englishmen wear a bowler hat and carry an umbrella and drink tea at 4 o'clock. That's not a stereotype it's a fact. My uncle went to Britain once, so he knows.
