'Many roots....'

Ivan: I saw a film on TV the other day. It was about a woman who had roots just everywhere. Her father was a mixture of African American and Chinese; her mother a mixture of Swedish and Pakistani. This woman had been born in Australia, moved to Belgium at 6 years old, and stayed most of her adult life in the United States.

All: Wow!

Urpi: Well, I still have some Spanish blood, traces of the Spanish colonisation of America, I suppose.

Isabel: One question, Ivan. Did this woman have children?

Ivan: No, she didn't, but, wow, if she had, the children would really be from nowhere and from everywhere at the same time.

Urpi: I guess one is 'from' where you're born and maybe also from where you've been living longer. Or, maybe, from where you feel better, happier. In the end, it would depend a lot on each individual.......

Ivan: You said that you have some Spanish roots, well, blood. Do you feel Spanish because of that?

Urpi: I'm Spanish, since I've been in Spain for more than two years and my parents applied for all of us to became Spanish citizens. Actually, I have double nationality. This rule about two years is a bit special, it's a special rule because of historical ties to Spain for people from Latin American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal and for Sephardic Jews. Bet you didn't know that!

Ivan: And you feel like you're from...

Urpi: I feel like I'm from both Spain and Peru. I came to Spain when I was 9, so for the moment I've lived longer in Peru than in Spain. If you ask me, I would say that I'm Peruvian-Spanish. I remember that Mohamed defines himself as Spanish-Moroccan, but he came to Spain when he was only 5.

Isabel: Sorry to interrupt your conversation... I would like to say something too! As you know, I'm a 'mixture' of Andalusian (from my mother) and Castilian (from my father). Mohamed is a mixture of Spanish Andalusian (from his mother) and Moroccan (from his father). Josep has Galician and Jewish roots. Maybe it's only people from rural and remote areas of the country who didn't mix much or at all. I've read that the Spaniards of today are actually a mixture of Celts, Goths, Franks, Visigoths, Barbarian tribes, Iberians, Arabs, and who knows who else.

Ivan: Well, yes, every country must be some mind of mixture, the idea of pure of blood is a myth. In any case, what would be the point in claiming or wanting this kind of pureness? What would be the point?

All: None!!

Isabel: Look, it has been great, as usual, to learn new things talking to you all, but next time it would be better if we sit down in a cafeteria, a park or whatever, instead of chatting in the gym. I had planned to do a lot of sport and instead of that I did a lot of... chatting!!
