I'm bilingual since I speak fluent Galician (Galego) and Spanish, (or you might call it Castilian, or Spanish-Castilian - not even language experts agree about the term). It won't suit everyone, but to avoid saying all of them all the time I'll just say 'Spanish' from now on. Personally, I like and value both languages, and both of them really come from Latin. I use either one without thinking about it really, depending on where I am and who I'm talking to. I mean, if someone talks to me in Galician I'll just reply in Galician. But if an older man or woman from out in the Galician countryside somewhere tries to talk to me in Spanish, I'll answer in Galician, because I know they'll understand it better. I'll even use their local dialect if I know it.
In the end, I think that language should help people communicate rather than for create barriers between them, but I guess they do both. I don't think people should be forced to speak something they don't want to..... |
