Hello. I'm Josep's grandfather. I was born in Galicia, but I went to Catalonia to work at 16. Catalonia is in the south east of Spain, on the Mediterranean sea. Catalonia, together with Madrid and the Basque Country, is one of the strong economic areas in Spain. Many people from other parts of Spain come to Catalonia to work and this is what I did. And many people from other nationalities also come here to work and live. In the biggest and oldest Catalan football team, 'Barça', I think there are many football players who are not from Catalonia either. As I was born in Galicia, I can speak Galician but since I went to Catalonia to work, and later I stayed there, I speak Catalan practically all the time. When I was younger I was in contact with my family from Galicia and I wrote and spoke to them and to my Galician friends in our langauge. The Catalan language is very similar to Galician so it has been no problem for me to speak it. Oh, yes, I taught some Galician to Josep since he asked. He learned quickly. Catalan is like my first language. I speak it at home with my wife (she is Catalan), with my son (Josep's father), with some of my friends... (I've never forced people to speak to me in one language or another). It is funny because I feel Galician in a way because I was born there, but I also feel Catalan because I've lived and worked in Catalonia so long and now I identify with it. I think it is very important to have an open mind and respect other cultures and be able to adapt to new things. I admire Catalan people very much. I have adapted to everything in Catalonia, but still I think that they work too much (Galicians as well). They (we) should learn a bit from Andalusian people and enjoy life more... When I was young, I became a 'casteller' in Catalonia, that is, I made 'castells' (human towers) with some other men. In the province of Tarragona there is this tradition of making human towers. Many men get together and they hold four or three men on top of them, and then three more, till they make a very high tower. Some human towers can be five men high. I like to follow this tradition and there is a Catalan saying that says - 'La pinya fa la força' (union makes strength). I am very happy now to have come to Catalonia because I met my wife here, had my children, and learned lots of new things in this new place, now my home.
