I speak Spanish perfectly well, since I came to Spain when I was only 5 years old. I also speak English and a bit of Mandinga. English is the official language of Gambia, and other common languages are Fulani and Ulof, as well as Mandinga. My parents still speak to me in English and Mandinga at home; English, because, as they say, it's the international language; Mandinga, because they want me not to lose my roots. Also, if one day we can visit Gambia it would be good to be able to talk with relatives and other people in one of their languages. I know my friend Mohamed can do this - he goes back to Morocco - but Gambia is much further away... I would like to go one day, even if I have to wait until I'm an adult. Oh, yes, I also speak French. I chose French at school, here in Spain. |
